In Summit, NJ, the ribbon cutting for the city’s new fire department headquarters was a major event, marked by a parade down Broad Street. For BFI, providing furniture solutions for this beautiful new space was an honor and an exciting challenge.

A firehouse is an emergency response center, an office, and a home away from home all rolled into one. Therefore, a diverse array of furnishings were required for this project. Meanwhile, the work involved strict adherence to the provisions and contracts associated with public sector construction.

The old firehouse of the Summit Fire Department (SFD) was in operation since 1949, called “home” by generations of firefighters. This word—home—is central for formulating any design plan for a firehouse. Firefighters work long shifts (up to 24 hours), which makes a firehouse a unique mix of workspaces and living areas. Thus, the furnishing vision for the SFD’s new headquarters consisted of varied layouts and pieces. These included everything from traditional corporate meeting rooms to lounge areas full of La-Z-Boy chairs.

To formulate preliminary furnishing designs, BFI consulted the firehouse’s architectural drawings to determine ideal layouts and product types. Our approach benefited from our team’s nuanced understanding of the building’s construction, varied uses, and contract restrictions. When we presented our work to the SFD Chief and Battallion Lieutenant, they were excited to proceed with the design vision we outlined.

Furnishings provided by BFI for the Summit FD’s new firehouse included tables, chairs, accessories, and workstations for spaces throughout the building. Furnished areas included meeting rooms, community spaces, and outdoor sitting areas.

The firehouse’s furnishings help establish a cozy, home-away-from-home atmosphere. At the same time, the facility includes a variety of office space settings, with both individual and collaborative workstations. Throughout the building, the furniture arrangements benefit from spacious layouts and plenty of natural lighting to create attractive, pleasant settings to spend time in.

The SFD leaders and firefighter team are thrilled with their new home. The building is gorgeous inside and out, featuring an impressive operations center, comfortable living spaces, and an upgraded fire truck bay.

The firehouses’s new furnishings contribute significantly to the look and feel of the facility. From cozy lounges to stylish office spaces, the building’s interior is attractive and comfortable. For BFI, it was a gratifying experience to help develop such an important space where essential workers will pass long hours for many years to come.
